How To Choose Between Different Types of Garage Door Openers

Essentially, all garage door openers perform the same function of opening the door by using a motor to push a trolley across a rail. However, there are key differences in how the motor makes this movement happen. There are four different types of garage door openers, each with their own set of advantages and disadvantages to consider:

  • Chain Drive Opener: This type of opener uses a metal chain to move the trolley. As the least expensive option for garage openers, chain drive openers are the most popular choice. However, they are also the noisiest option. For people who are bothered by hearing a noise from their garage every time it opens and closes, this type of opener is not ideal.

  • Belt Drive Opener: Rather than use a noisy chain to push or pull the trolley into place, this type of opener depends on a belt. While this option comes with a higher price tag, people who are sensitive to noise will appreciate how much quieter this type of garage door opener is.

  • Screw Drive Opener: A screw drive opener lifts or closes the garage door by using a threaded steel rod. By rotating the rod, the trolley is driven along the track. This option is louder than a belt drive opener, but it requires minimal maintenance due to a smaller number of moving parts

Why Opener Size Is Important

The size of an opener has a direct relationship with the size of the garage door that it needs to open. The heavier and larger the door, the more powerful the garage door opener needs to be. For homes with only one small garage door, an opener with a one-third horsepower rating can suffice. Double doors or doors made out of heavier materials typically need a minimum horsepower rating of one-half. For the heaviest, largest doors or doors that are used with more frequency, a minimum rating of three-fourth horsepower is necessary.

Why Professional Installation Is Necessary

Repairing or installing a garage door opener is a complicated task. Garage doors are incredibly heavy and are difficult to handle without any help.
